Vermilion Bay is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by South Marsh Island, a remote island roughly 22 miles long. Its endless shorelines, creeks, canals, oyster beds and bayous create prime habitat for redfish, flounder, sheepshead and black drum. Winter is when bull reds and giant black drum move through. When weather, tides and water conditions align, seasonal nearshore trips may pursue tripletail and cobia.
