Why anglers fish here

Why Vermilion Bay offers some of the best red fishing in Louisiana

For anglers comparing Louisiana redfish charters, Vermilion Bay offers something different. Just south of Lafayette, the bay opens into a vast system of marsh banks, bayous and shell reefs built for redfish—and for anglers who want to experience the quieter side of South Louisiana.

01

Vermilion Bay and South Marsh Island

Vermilion Bay is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by South Marsh Island, a remote island roughly 22 miles long. Its endless shorelines, creeks, canals, oyster beds and bayous create prime habitat for redfish, flounder, sheepshead and black drum. On many weekdays, you may spend the day without seeing another fishing boat.

02

A third-generation Louisiana fishing guide

Capt. Troy Nash is a full-time veteran guide with more than 30 years of experience. He has spent a lifetime chasing fish across Louisiana’s Gulf Coast bays and marshes and welcomes fly, spinning and baitcasting anglers—from first-timers to experienced crews.

03

What you can catch throughout the year

Every charter includes the boat, fuel, rods and reels, tackle, bait, ice and bottled water. Depending on season and conditions, trips may target redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum and sheepshead. Slot-size “keeper” redfish are available year-round throughout the bay and marsh system.

04

The best seasons for South Louisiana redfish

Spring and fall are traditionally excellent redfish seasons. Spring through fall also brings strong opportunities for keeper reds, speckled trout and flounder. Winter is when bull reds and giant black drum move through. When weather, tides and water conditions align, seasonal nearshore trips may pursue tripletail and cobia.
